Here is a photo of a firework that I took few years ago:
Step 1. Use a tripod because we are going to make long exposures and a remote, wireless or not.
Step 2. I always shoot manual, ISO 100, my aperture is between f/7,1 and f/11. For the shutter speed 4 seconds works well. My ideal scene is f/7,1 and 4 seconds but it depends on the situation, if it is too dark just add one or two seconds.
Step 3. Focus on the area where the firework will be or on one of the firework and then turn off the auto focus. To make sure you capture the fireworks, I advise you to take a 100 mm lens or other lens but not a wide lens because for security reason you need to be at a certain distance.
Step 4. Set your white balance on tungsten or fluorescent so you can see on your screen how it will look like:
Step 5. Now start to shoot as soon as the fireworks ball goes up.
Then you can retouch your fireworks in Lightroom. Here is one of the photo I took of the Eiffel Tower on the 14Th of July:
